Gladys O. Ashley, age 90, of Brookville passed away March 23, 2003. She was born (September 8, 1912) to Samuel T. and Ozella P. Mobley Simmonds of Decatur County, Indiana. She married Albert C. Ashley on August 9, 1932 and they resided in Brookville and Franklin County throughout their marriage.
The family, through The Brookville Foundation, established the Gladys Simmonds Ashley Endowment. The endowment will provide funds to assist the Imagination Library of Franklin County in the funding of books that are mailed out and addressed to preschool children each month until their fifth (5th) birthday.
This endowment is being established in memory of Gladys Simmonds Ashley, who loved to read for her own enjoyment, and also to her seven children. This is evident when you walked through the front door of their home and saw shelves lined with all kinds of books. After the children left home, Mrs. Ashley would go to the Brookville Library once a week and fill a bag with books to take home and read. When she lost her eyesight, she would listen to audio books but there was nothing like holding a real book. She would have been pleased to know that her love of books and reading was passed from her children to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and now to the children of Franklin County.*
